Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, on October 4, 1822. His mother was Sophia Birchard Hayes (1792-1866). Hayes was taught at schools in Delaware and Norwalk, Ohio, and Middletown, Connecticut. As the nineteenth president of the United States, he won a questionable and wildly contested political race against Samuel Tilden.
Hayes pulled back soldiers from the Reconstruction states so as to reestablish local control and positive attitude, a choice that many saw as a disloyalty to African Americans in the South. He served only one term, as he had guaranteed in his inaugural speech.
